See a recap video (to the right) of how to bandage a dog’s foot.

Cover the wound with a dressing (shiny side towards the wound) and place cotton wool between the toes.  Then apply a padded layer such as Soffban, covering the bottom of the foot in a + formation first and then running the bandage around the leg going up the leg first and then back down again if you feel you need to.  Each layer of bandage should cover the layer below by half to 2/3 of its width.  Then apply the conforming layer in the same way and finally cover with a layer of cohesive bandage (and/ or hold in place with tape around the top).  Make sure you can easily fit TWO to three fingers between the bandage and the dog’s leg.  If you can’t it is too tight and should be removed and you should start again.  If it is too loose, the bandage can move around too much and cause sores.

Cover the dressing with a waterproof layer (such as a plastic bag) only for a very short period of time whilst the dog goes outside.  Leaving this on too long will cause the dog’s foot to sweat and the bandage to get soggy which can cause sores to develop too.
